There are many reasons why we are organizing and forming our union for Volusia County employees. The union difference has been shown again and again with public service workers like us making better wages, enjoying better benefits and have better job satisfaction when they have a union contract.

But a seat at the bargaining table and a voice in the services we provide is more than just numbers on a spreadsheet - it is being able to make a positive change for yourself, your coworkers and your community.

Here is what front-line workers have given to why they joined the Volusia County Workers Union:

  • Real training and promotion opportunities so people can commit years, even a career, to making this county the best it can be.
  • A pay raise that actually raises our pay, not just one that is eaten up immediately by an increase in our health insurance costs.
  • By making our jobs better we can lower turnover and make it easier to fill open positions so we are not doing more than one person's job every single day.
  • To hold the county accountable for the promises they make, the same as how they force us to sign honesty statement.
  • Better workplace safety and policies, especially when dealing with working in Florida's heat and intense weather.
  • Transparency in pay and benefits so that people doing the same jobs are being paid the same amount, with not favoritism or special treatment.
  • Seniority should be rewarded. Less experienced, less trained and less qualified workers should not be brought on making more than the people who show them how to get the job done correctly.
  • A contract that will spell out the rules we have to follow so we can finally end having them changed overnight without any explanation or say in them.
  • Hazard pay because if the county has to pay more for the work they do then they will have a stake in making our jobs safer.
  • Respect - we are always being second guessed, being tracked and treated with suspicion instead of the professional adults we are.
